Dear Victoria:  A few months back I had purchased both of your books. After reading them I had purchased a website, http://www.carmanassoc.com. I also signed up on one website (Notaryrotary.com). Within the past month I have done 5 signings and have already received payment on two of them. Being in Maine this is a good start, and I thank you for your books and your willingness to teach others about the ways a notary can make extra cash if they have the desire to work for it.  I also read your articles and love the tips and suggestions you give. Dear Kevin:  Thank you so much, but you deserve most of the credit.  Many notaries enter this business and do not take the time to learn the business and the documents. In other words, they do a very poor job processing the documents and the companies do not call them again for signings.  Then, these same people will complain they are not getting any work.  On the other hand, you must be doing a good job or you would not have been called for 5 signings so soon.  Congratulations!  I am sure you will build a very successful business.

Dear Victoria:  I have a suggestion for the virtual bankruptcy assistants out there.  If you need help in determining the market value of property-- Order Intuit's "It's Deductible" at http://www.itsdeductible.com/ for only $20.  This program gives an excellent variety of items along with three classifications of condition. The dollar amounts are recognized by IRS for charitable contributions and are based upon your "yard sale" criteria. The only drawback to the program is that it relates to the current tax year, but I've found that older versions still give a good "ball park" estimate. --Sonji

Dear Victoria: I just got done reading your notary book and I'm a bit confused.  In it you state that we will need a "laser fax machine."  Does this mean that clients can just fax the loan docs via laser fax machine which in turn rules out having to purchase a laser printer? Or, do we need to purchase both? The book is great, I only wish I had purchased it sooner.  I've been commissioned since late January and have only been called out to one assignment which fell through:( I've also discovered that my marketing was done totally wrong and that's real disappointing because it means having to spend more money to correct these errors.)  I haven't given up, one way or another I'm determined to succeed, but it really is hard. The worst part is that a friend (who has a friend in the business) suggested that I get into the business because she says I'm very bright and great with people. She got her commission in October and said not to worry, that she would help me break into the business.  Needless to say, that hasn't been the case.  Thanks for your time and please do not stop sharing your knowledge of the business and suggestions with the rest of us trying to build our NSA careers, you are truly appreciated.  God bless!!  --Violet

Dear Violet:  It's a shame the notary backed out on her promise to help you, but you will find that people do this all the time. But don't worry, there are many successful notaries who are willing to mentor you. You just have to find them and this can take a little time also. You start by gleaning the notary directories on the internet for notaries in your area and contacting as many as you can find.

Next, to answer your question about the "laser fax machine" -- a LASER fax (or printer) is required to print any legal documents. You cannot use an ink jet printer (a printer that uses wet ink to print pages.)  If funds are tight at the moment and you cannot purchase a laser fax, you can sign up with an online fax service so that you will receive your faxes by email. Then you can print the emailed fax out on your laser printer instead of receiving them on a fax machine.
